Gentle Hearts in Dark Places

Nord stepped into one of the empty rooms of the dorm building where the dogs stayed, Jasper followed closely after. A limp form of a young dog was on Nord's back. He looked around as a few other dogs passed. "Faith...! He called simply, lifting an ear to listen for the clicking of claws on the old, but well made floor. He stepped into an unoccupied room and deposited the pup, non too gently on the floor, nodding at Jasper to stay with him, before turning to look back into the halls. "Maggie better not have her airing bedding again.." he grumbled.

Faith was all the way down the long hallway, but it seemed the creamy wolf could hear her name called, especially by her master from a mile away. Trotting quickly so as not to keep him waiting, Faith wove humbly between the large sentinels and entered the room where her master stood over an unconscious smaller dog. "You called sir?" She asked softly, eyes sharp and ears forward for instruction though her tail remained in its submissively lowered posture.

Nord eyed Faith and snorted gruffly. "We have a new recruit... I want you to clean him up and tend to any wounds he might have. I'll send you another guard to get you what you need in supplies, but the pup is to remain in lock down and is not allowed to leave this room. Understand??" Nord began to leave the room, Jasper following him, and Nord placed a paw on the door.

Faith gave a bow. "Understood sir. As you wish." She hardly ever spoke in a hurry, her words remained clear and direct, not too fast and not too slow. She waited for her master to leave before turning to face the new recruit. It was hardly fair he had to be dragged in like this, but Faith had never known a life of fairness. Padding silently over to him she looked over his wounds. He had been through quite the ordeal, she couldn't imagine he would be trying to escape.

Nord hummed before closing the door. As he walked down the hallway he grabbed the first sentinel he saw and gave his orders. The dog obeyed and took his place reluctantly next to the door after Nord took his leave.

As the sentinel brought her the water and cloth Faith whispered a thank you before soaking the cloth in the water. She would need to ask for some ointment, or some of the larger wounds had a chance of infection. Wringing the cloth out she gently set to work, dabbing lightly first around the shoulders and neck before. Poor thing. Hopefully he would sleep until she secured the ointment.

A soft moan escaped his lips as the young male started to come around with the wolf's touch. His eyes blinked slowly open as his mind registered a light stinging sensation and wetness on the back of his neck. His mind filled with the earlier events of the day and he lurched to his feet and looked around in panic. A bare room with light from a covered window and a mattress on the ground in the far corner, and another dog in the room. The fur bristled on his nape as he backed away, ears dropped. "Who.. who are you?? Where am I? Where's my mother and father??"

Faith managed to keep the bucket from falling over as the young dog lurched to his paws. With that stable she looked at him with soft eyes, her heart breaking at his words. The door was still closed, she would try to calm him before the guard outside felt the need to come in.
"Shhh, it's alright, I'm not here to harm you. I'm sorry, but I do not know where your parents are. You're hurt, will you let me clean your wounds?"

Ko's ears perked at the softness of her voice. She wasn't acting like a Sentinel dog. He tried to think back. Last thing he remembered was a giant bear of a dog looming over him before he passed out. "I'm.. hurt?" He lifted a paw to gingerly rub a dull throb on the side of his head. "I.. they're gone.. Maru! Is she here??" A dull thump on the wooden door made him jump as the guard on the outside whacked it.

Faith instinctively jumped too at the sound of the pounding behind the door. Stepping forward protectively she kept her voice low but serious. "Please, keep your voice down. You were captured by the sentinels and brought here. I don't know where your family is, but I might be able to find out, if you can be patient." She said, hoping the idea at least would calm him down.

"O..oh.." Tears jumped into his eyes, and he habitually turned his head away. Boys shouldn't cry. His sister had ran and his parents gone. Maybe he was the only one left. "..Okay.." They might hurt him more. Some of the Sentinels that roamed the district were bullies when they were in the shadows. He'd had a few run ins with them himself. What if it was worse here? Where was here? What were they going to do to him? He sat and looked at the wolf. Wait.. She was an enslaved? The collar that was worn by them.. "Who are you..?" He couldn't help but ask.

The creamy wolf gave a soft sigh, grateful he was no longer crying out. "Forgive me, I forgot to introduce myself. You can call me whatever you like, but the name my parents gave me is Faith. Might inquire who I have the honor or serving today?" She kept one ear turned to the door, ever ready in case it decided to open.

Ko perked his ears lightly. "Serving..? Oh.. um.. I'm Kouji... umm.. you can call me Ko.." He looked around at the room they were in. Old pictures on the wall and what looked like a door to another room were the only things he could really make out. "Where are we? What do the Sentinels want to do with me?" He feared the answer. The stories went that dogs that tried to escape the city were enslaved or disappeared into the vault. He'd never been there himself. He sat where he was, nervous to approach her.

"It is a pleasure to meet you Kouji, ...Ko, she corrected, leaning down to pick up the bucket again and bring it closer to him. "My master told me..." she hesitated. Faith believed it was always beat to tell the truth, but she didn't know how much the poor pup could take. Gently starting to clean the wound on his shoulder she said not looking him in the eyes. "You have been recruited my dear. Once given a short time to heal, training will begin." Outside a bird chirped, Faith wished that kind of freedom for this pup now.

Ko didn't move away when Faith moved closer. "Recruited...?" He mumbled softly. He had no idea what that meant exactly, but something told him the slave probably couldn't or wouldn't tell him. The cool cloth touched his shoulder. Her aversion of the eyes made him look away too. He didn't know how to talk to.. "slaves". His mother always told him to be kind to everyone. How was he suppose to act? "U..um..." He sat quietly.

Faith worked softly but with purpose. Cleaning his shoulders and neck. "Tell me about your family, it ... it may be some time before you can speak of them freely."

"Wha..?? Oh.. My Mother and Father.. and Maru.. Father's a hard worker and worked around the edges of the wall.. Mom stays home with my big sister, Maru and me. Ummm.. Maru is.. was..." He paused. "I dunno..." He was still concerned with what had happened. He didn't know what to say about them. Everything seemed like it was a blur. "Faith.. Do you have family?"

Faith hesitated in her work for only a moment. "Forgive me, no one has ever asked me that before." She was almost done cleaning him up, but she was working slower now. "I used to, there were four of us. My mother, my father, and my sister. We were all sold to different masters...I haven't seen them since, well, I saw my sister once, she had a good master...I was proud of her."

Ko lay down slowly, not to jar Faith. "You were.. born into it ?" Actually saying it felt weird. It was like putting her on a whole different level than him. He wasn't anything special. At least she wasn't made a slave because she committed a crime or anything. At least he hoped not.

Faith froze, not because of his use of words but because of the memory that came back. "I was...yes...so was my sister. My father, had hoped for something better." She didn't want to slander her Father's name, blame can always be pointed somewhere, Faith had never chosen to cast blame on him.

Maybe he said something wrong. "Sorry," Left his mouth before he could stop himself. He laid his head in his paws and looked at his toes. If he talked about his family now, it might make her sad or angry at him. All her family were slaves. "T..Thank you, Faith.." He mumbled around his paws.

Faith gasped out loud. Her paws coming up to cover her mouth. Water from her cloth spraying onto Ko's face. "I apologize young sir, but no one has ever...thanked me as you have." She grinning a little feeling giddy. "You are...welcome. That feels wonderful to say now doesn't it."

Ko looked up at her in surprise, getting spritzed in the face in the process. Her giddiness passed to him tho and his face flushed a bit. "Y.. Yea!" He said, smiling a bit more. A sudden knocking on the door made him jump as another dog stuck his head in the room. "Oi, Slave, the boss is calling for you, get a move on..."

Faith jumped nearly knocking the bucket over, still you could see she retained her giddy air about her. "Yes sir right away sir." She turned to Ko, "I'll be back...with some ointment...if I can, perhaps later. Keep you head low, and your chin up. You'll be fine alright." She whispered before skittering towards the door with the bucket in tow.

Ko rose as Faith started to leave, stepping in the puddle she left. "You'll be back... Right, Faith? Please don't forget." His voice quivered as he followed a bit behind her. Ears flattened against his head.

Faith paused at the door. "Is that an order...sir?" She asked, her eyes hoping he would catch the hint. She was a slave after all, and though his commands would never outrank that of her masters, she would eventually have to do what he said very soon.

Ko's ears drooped. "N...No... I was just hoping.. You'd come back.." His nervousness returned and he sat where he stood.

Faith's ears fell too. He hadn't gotten the hint, it would be much harder for her to come back if she hadn't been given an order. Perhaps he would learn soon. She tried one last time. "Is it your wish sir, that I return to attend to you?"

His ears perked up a bit. "Yes... please return." He still hadn't understood, but it was phrased in a way that encouraged him to respond. His tail wagged lightly.

Faith beamed at him. "As you wish." Her submissive tail wagging slightly before she was out of the room and the door closed. Faith had to run a little faster than usual to attend to her Master's call, but she felt lighthearted, she had found a little ray of sunshine in this dreary place.
