Running from Death

The sun was shining warmly today, as the blue-coloured saber padded out of the den. He could feel the warm sun on his fur, and knew it must be late morning. Shaking his fur of some dirt, he licked his chest fur to clean it up. Seji had been sleeping with his head on Jay, the fur was all messy and ruffled in that spot. Jay had long since given up on making Seji stop cuddling him when they slept, instead he just tried to ignore it.

After cleaning up his fur, Jay perked up his ear’s trying to tell if anyone else was up.

CCDooMo
Having been up early, Zephyra padded along the trees back toward her makeshift packs makeshift den. It was taking some getting used to, Zeph hadn't slept with other sabers in a den for over a year now, and now, for the last several weeks she was crammed in a den with not two, not three, but 5 other sabers. She loved it, but Fiske kicking her in the face had been enough to wake her when the sun had just begun to turn the sky grey.
Coming into view of the den she saw Jay, the teen that tended to be the most quiet, but Zeph thought quite responsible. He was attempting to fix his bed head, no doubt the handiwork of Seji. Approaching him she smiled kindly.
"Good morning. Here you almost have it." She chuckled licking the spot where his fur still stuck out at angles a few times to tame it. "Much better." Zephyra had never thought of herself as a mother, but there was a serious need of some kind of motherly touch in the rag tag team, and she found herself doing it more than she had ever expected to.

Grace-Winters

Jay’s ear’s perked up as he heard the sound of paw-steps coming towards him. He turned his head towards the sound, sniffing the air. The familiar scent of Zephyra washed over him, and a smile appeared on his face.

“Good morning Zephyra,” He said waving his tail in greeting. Jay respected Zeph a lot, she always seemed to show kindness to him and the others…And she didn’t sleep on him like Seji did. Or pull his ear’s like Fiske…Though he cared about Seji and Fiske a lot too. He was pulled from his thoughts when she licked the rest of his fur, feeling his cheeks heat up slightly. The slightest of a blush on his cheek fur, he gave her a nod.

“Uh, Thanks.” He smiled at her, “How are you?” He asked.

CCDooMo
Zeph sat back on her butt there beside him her storm grey eyes watching a bluejay for a moment before she smiled and answered. "I am well thank you. Just looking for someone to take a walk with me. Earlier this morning I heard the trumpet of a mammoth, thought it might be worth checking out." She shot him a side glance of a smirk. Raising her eyebrow a little. It was a little naughty, Ebi would certainly rather they hunt for breakfast than go pester mammoths, but Zephyra hadn't taken orders from anyone in a while, and a mammoth herd was something to be seen

Grace-Winters

Jay couldn’t see her expression, but he could hear the playfulness in her voice. Jay smiled slightly back at her, though he was abit nervous at the idea of watching giant mammoth that could crush him flat. But it wasn’t like they’d be that close…And he wasn’t doing anything else. So after a moment of pause, Jay nodded.

“Sure, why not? I’d like to go for a walk.” He agreed, swishing his tail slightly.

CCDooMo

Zephyra had thought a cat his age would jump at the chance, so she was a little surprised by his hesitant response. Great, I'm a bad influence on the younger cats. She thought bitterly to herself. Oh well, what's done is done. Standing up with a smile, her face betraying no hint of conflict she flicked him playfully with her tail. "Alright then, lets hurry and maybe we will be back in time to grab the others some breakfast."

Grace-Winters

Jay nodded, jumping up to his feet he padded after her. They walked deeper into the grass, he could feel it brush up against his belly. “So how long have you been up?” He asked her, trying to spark some conversation. Jay wasn’t the best as socializing, but he still tried his best anyways, he was used to being on his own with just him and Fiske together. And wasn’t used to having so many other felines to speak to.

CCDooMo
Zephyra set the pace leading the way through the territory. She wasn't exactly sure where the mammoths might be so she kept her nose alert for whiffs of the large beasts.
"Not too long." She responded simply. "I've finally gotten used to Seji's snores." She smirked. The first night she had thought there was an earthquake or thunderstorm. How would she ever be able to sleep through that, but now it was just a part of the nightime noises. "So Jay, tell me. That is if it isn't too sensitive. Where exactly did you and the little fuzz ball Fisk come from?"

Grace-Winters

Jay listened the sound of her paw-steps and followed her scent through the field, sniffing the air himself for any scent of mammoth. He chuckled slightly at her comment about Seji, “Yeah it took me awhile to get used to that too.” He said, the corner of his mouth lifting in a slight smirk. Though when she asked him where he came from he felt abit reserved at first. He didn’t like thinking about that, but as he thought about it. He realized that they’d figure it out eventually, and Zephyra was just trying to be friendly. He didn’t want to disappoint her with a vague answer.

“I was abandoned by my mother, wandered alone for a long time when I ran into Fiske in the woods. I couldn’t leave him all alone…And I guess we both shared something, we were both abandoned…So we stuck together until we ran into you guys.” Jay explained, his voice was calm but he felt a pang of pain in his heart as the memory returned to him

CCDooMo
Zephyra slowed to a stop after he finished. The world they lived in at this time was leaving so many alone. Zephyra didn't know what it was like to be abandoned by her mother. Even now, she knew her morher, if she was still alive loved her. Zephyra was alone because she hated her father, who had treated her like a prisoner since discovering her powers. She turned her grey eyes on Jay, a strange glimpse of an internal tempest turned soft visible if you knew what you were looking at. "Jay, our pack may be one of the most retarded group of sabers I've ever seen, but I've been alone long enough to know a family when I see one. I intend to stay, and if you want to call this your home with us, then I can promise you that you will never have to worry about being alone again."

Grace-Winters

Jay turned his head down towards the ground, trying to hide the fact his eye’s watered abit at her words. He didin’t like to admit it, but it hadn’t been that long ago that he was abandoned…It was still a very emotional and sensitive topic for him. And her words really touched his heart, making him feel a warmth inside that he hadn’t felt in a long time.

“Thank you Zepthrya…I-I don’t know what to say…I’m n-not good at this sorry…” He said awkwardly, shuffling his paws in an almost shy way. It was strange, they had only been talking for a little while. But Zepth had a way of bringing Jay out of hiding in himself, and showing a truer side of him. The awkward cub who didn’t understand why he was left alone, who had never been taught how to act right around others of his kind, or taught what love, family, or friends was supposed to look like. But together with this makeshift, jumbled together, strange family they had…He would learn, they would learn together. The thought brought a soft smile to his face, as he turned back towards Zepthrya.

“Thank you, it really means a lot…I’m glad to have a family like you guys…”

“Though I wouldn’t mind less of Seji’s drool on me.” He tried to joke, laughing in a slightly nervous way.

CCDooMo

Zephyra laughed herself. A true laugh not a fake one like she had for so many years. "Wouldn't we all. That Saber doesn't drink enough water to drool that much." Just then came the sound of a mammoth trumpeting. It didn't sound too far away and so Zephyra smiled. "Come on Jay, this you gotta see." She said nodding her head in the direction of the sound and taking off at a quick trot.

Grace-Winters
Jay chuckled lightly, and nodded perking up his ear’s. He could smell a musky scent of Mammoth not far ahead. He ran after her, a bit more of excitement in his step, curious and eager to see the large beasts he’s heard of. As they broke through the tree-line, the beasts came into view….Or into hearing and smell for him. There was a whole herd of them in the large open field, snorting, sniffing, and stomping around, swinging their huge tusks around as they moved around.

CCDooMo

Coming to the edge of the clearing Zephyra paused at the sight. The herd was much bigger than she had originally thought it would be. The large beasts slowly roamed and their trunks ripped up handfuls of the tall grass, baby mammoths staying close to their mothers tails swishing excitedly. "Pretty incredible right? It takes a whole pack to bring one down, if you're lucky."

Grace-Winters
“Wow, they sound so big!” Jay said, perking his ears up. “How big are they?” He asked her, trying to imagine in his mind based on the sounds and smell of them. Being blind he of course couldn’t tell himself, his tail swished behind him.

CCDooMo
Zephyra made a face he couldn't see. How to describe how big a mommoth was. "Well if you have a good idea of how big Ebi is then picture at least 3 of him each standing on the others head. They have tusks, like our fang but they grow down then up in front of them. And they are fluffy, very fluffy." She finished watching a baby mammoth sneeze and scare it's mom.

Grace-Winters
“Wow! And Ebi is big!” Jay said his eye’s growing larger as he listened to her description. “I don’t think I’d want to get in their way that’s for sure.” Jay said, he turned his head in the direction her voice was. Somehow accidently, he was actually looking right at her.
As they spoke, the mammoth’s slowly moved across the field, munching on grass here and there. They subtly moved closer to the felines.

CCDooMo

Zephyra chuckled. "Yeah you want to give them plenty of distance." Though almost immediately she was distracted thinking of Ebisou. Zephyra hated the complex feelings of emotions that rattled around in her stomach. The Saber was too much like her father for her to be completely comfortable around him, but then he would do things that were so unlike her father, say things that made her heart pick up its race. She would rather be free of him completely, but she had promised Akiru, and now Jay that she wouldn't go anywhere. She would be a monster to leave because she was afraid of how she felt around Ebisou. So distracted was Zeph, that she failed to acknowledge the dark storm clouds that had rolled in from the south. They hadn't ever blocked the sun from shining, and a strange breeze that remained high over their heads had carried it to them. Only now did she look up to see the grey, rolling in above their heads as thunder rumbled menacingly
"Jay, we should probably..." CRACK BOOM

Lighting struck with no warning at the far end of the open feild. Bigger than any lighting bolt she had ever seen it killed a mammoth just like that. Her words were drown out by the deafening boom that had taken the life of a 5 ton animal. Her ears ringing Zeph looked up in time to see the entire herd of mammoths was stampeding in fright, and they were heading directly towards them.

Grace-Winters

“I would imag-“ Jay was cut off by the sound of thunder, it did concern him a bit. And he was about to mention they should go, when a giant BOOM echoed into his ear’s. Causing the saber to jump up, every hair on his body sticking up like pine needles. He instinctively let out a hissing noise, his ear’s ringing loudly. Jay could hear muffled noise, but the ringing was so loud that it took a good ten seconds before he could hear again. And what he heard terrified him.
The sound of stomping, LOUD thunderous stomping. And not just one, or two…Many. Very many.
“Zephyra?!?!” Jay said, suddenly not sure where she was, or what to do. He was frozen in place.

CCDooMo
Realizing Jay was frozen Zephyra gave him a hard shove, he hadn't heard her yelling at him to move, the thunder having been so loud she honestly hadn't been able to hear herself talk. Trying again she shoved him in the direction of the trees. "Jay! The Mammoths are stampeding we have to move!" This was bad, Jay was blind, and the pounding of the Mammoths panic would make it near impossible for him to hear her enough to follow. "We have to climb!" She instructed, hoping she could at least get him up the nearest tree.

Grace-Winters
Through the thundering noise of stampeding five ton animals, Jay felt something shove him. At first he thought maybe the Mammoths were on them already, and he felt his heart Leap out of his chest. But his nose picked up the scent of Zephyra, and he felt her shove him again. He half-stumbled, half-leaped forward in the direction she had shoved him. Trying to o hear her over the noise, but it was very hard, all he could pick up were a few words. He ran forward, gripping the dirt with his claws as he did, that was....Until Jay ran face first into a tree anyways. He learned that moment - bark did not taste good.

CCDooMo

Not sure whether or not Jay had heard her, Zeph stayed close beside his tail as he streaked with relief towards the trees. He made it into the forest and was about 10 yards into the thicket when she turned to see the Mammoths were just entering the trees themselves. Their eyes white with fear as another bolt of lighting struck somewhere she couldn't see through the trees. She turned forward again in time to see Jay smack face first into the trunk of a tree big enough for them to climb. Now or never they had 10 seconds before the Mammoths would crush them. Zeph may not have been as big as Ebi but she was strong, and adrenaline was pounding in her ears along with the new crack of thunder. Shoving her nose behind him she shoved Jay up as high up the bark as she could reach, hoping he would get the hint and start climbing higher

Grace-Winters
Jay was stunned for only a few seconds as his ears roared, he felt Zephyra shoving him upwards, quickly getting the idea. The blue saber dug black claws into the bark, pulling himself up, he was up in the tree within seconds. No need to tell Jay twice, the last thing he wanted was to be crushed flat. Once he was in the tree, he tried to hear or smell for Zephyra, hopping she had made it up in the tree. "Zephrya? Zeph?" He said, badly able to hear himself speak, but when he sniffed the air he caught scent of her. And calmed down slightly, digging his claws deep into the bark.

CCDooMo
Zephyra sighed relieved as he climbed, and once he was out of the way she jumped, scraping up the tree behind him and nosing Jay up a little higher. Just in time too, the Mammoths had reached them, heavy frantic bodies navigating through the trees, some of the smaller trees getting run down completely.
It was then that Zephyra felt it. Had she possessed any other power she probably would have had no idea, but it was a tingling in her paws, felt through the bark of the tree. Lighting was about to strike, and it was aiming right for her and Jay.
"Jay keep your head down!" She screamed, positioning herself over him when BOOM!
If possible, the thunder was even louder than the first as the lightning struck their tree Zephyra's body intercepted the strike before it hit Jay. Screaming unheard over the thunder she felt the immense power strike every cell in her body, and fill it to breaking point. The bark cracking under the strain of her paws, a moment no longer than 3 seconds felt like an eternity. And then everything was quiet.

Grace-Winters

Chaos, that was the only word that could describe the last ten minutes. Loud noise roaring all around him, wet thick water clinging to his pelt. A scream from Zephyra to get down followed by her pressing her body against him, to shield him...from what? Jay had no idea, his mind was a jumbled fog of questions and panic. But then the air felt..tingly, like that feeling when you wake up and you were sleeping on your arm. The tingling grew, the clouds over head roared and grumbled with life. And then the loudest boom Jay had ever hear in his whole life rocked his world. He was sure he was dead. This was it. Ebi would find their fried and black bodies hanging from a tree. Well, the world had never been very fair to him anyways...

However, as Jay waited for his life to end...he realized. He wasn't dead. "We're alive?" He said as a moment of silence followed, after all this noise he almost didn't want to break the silence. It was nice to only hear the soft patter of rain, the muffled sound of Mammoths in the distance. The animals were long gone by now, they weren't sticking around for anymore lighting. "W-what happened?" He asked, "Zephyra?"

CCDooMo

Ringing, that was all she could hear, the power of that lightnings was still circulating in her, and it took every once of her consentration to channel it. Teeth clenched and legs tretmbling, finally she realeased it, straight up. A bolt of lighting shot straight into the clouds and there disappeared. Gasping for air now Zephyra swayed, and even though she knew somewhere in her head that Jay was still beneath her she collasped. Hardly even aware of the water dripping down onto her pelt as little sparks of electricity sparked here and there along her body.

Grace-Winters
When Zephyra didn’t answer, Jay shifted slightly. “Zephrya?” A moment after he spoke the sound of electricity hit his ears. And he felt that tingling feel travel up his spine, followed by a familiar loud BOOM. This one wasn’t as loud as the last, but it still concerned him.
Then he felt a heavy weight collapse on top on him, “Zephrya? Are you okay? Zepthrya? “He asked. Perking up his ear’s, he could tell the weight was Zeph’s collapsed body. Jay listened, and could still hear her breathing. He shifted down the branch they were on, slowly sliding closer to the main trunk of the tree.

CCDooMo
Hearing her name be called, she slowly opened her eyes. "Jay?" She asked softly. "Are you alright?"

Grace-Winters
"Yes...I'm fine. Are you okay? What happened?" He asked, feeling her move slightly above him.

CCDooMo
Slowly she shifted herself so that she could slide off of Jay, but she felt etxhausted, and relieved. "Good, it didn't hit you. Just...just give me a second to catch my breath and we can go home."

Grace-Winters
Jay hesitated when he heard how tired she was, "I can carry you...I-if you need me too. You sound pretty exhausted, are you alright? Should I go get Aspen?" He asked her, concern in his voice. As he sat up, and turned towards her.

CCDooMo
Zephyra smiled, "let me just get down from the tree...and then I'll let you help me." She said, slowly making her way down and flopping to the trampled undergrowth rather than landing.

Grace-Winters
Jay felt abit embarrassed, his cheeks feeling hot, so instead of answering he just nodded. After hearing her soft thud, he backed up digging his claws into the trunk. Then slowly sliding down, until he felt the ground under him and hop down.

CCDooMo
After a few steps Zeph realized she didn't have the strength to walk any further. "Jay, I'm sorry, do you think you could carry me home?" She asked, could he fond his way if she passed out

Grace-Winters
Jay followed along side her, when she stumbled. "Zephyra?" He pressed against her to support her. "S-Sure I can carry you." Jay said, he was abit embarrassed, but he was more concerned about Zeph's well being then his own pride. He crouched down low, "Can you climb on?"

CCDooMo
She leaned over and lifted her paw up slumping onto him harder than she had inteded. "Sorry." She breathed, eyes closing. She was gonna pass out. "Jay, I'll be okay, and I'm glad you're alright."

Grace-Winters
"No worries," Jay said standing up slowly when he felt she was firmly on him. "Thank you for saving me back there Zeph...I'll make sure we get back home and get Aspen to look at you." Jay said, as he padded back the way they came, towards the den.
